Etymology Of Name
The acronym "PJ" did not always stand for Petaling Jaya.
When the area was initially being developed by the British, it was decided upon by the founding members of the newly formed municipal council that the area was to be called Palanivel Janarthanan after the council's President.
However, racial politics and firm opposition from other councilmen, Alvin Liew and Philip Tan, caused the name to be changed to Petaling Jaya instead.
They retained the acronym as a show of respect for the President who then relocated to Putrajaya in 1997 and unsuccessfully campaigned to change that city's name to "Palajaya".
